Oozak's self-titled first release was a six-track EP of covers. Oozak founder Geoffrey Leventham says that they chose to make covers to improve their chances of popular acceptance. "There is so much anger, so much bad feeling towards the kazoo. It was too much to expect the average listener to put this all to one side. We wanted them to hear our Billy Jean on the radio, and tell their friends, and then someone would say, 'That's a kazoo, you know', and they'd be like, 'Wow'. That's what we wanted."
Despite a luke warm reception, Leventham's dream for Oozak came true. Although Billy Jean was critically panned as being "derivative, unoriginal, and lacking in basic musicality", some fortuitous radio coverage helped the Oozak EP through three pressings, and spurred Oozak to greater heights.
