Advanced Technique: Using Your Hands to Sculpt Your Kazoo's Sound

(introduction | holding | humming | hands)

So you're getting good at the kazoo; you've chosen some songs to play, and you've got the basics down. But you can't quite produce the sound you're after - something's missing, but you don't know what.

Quite often, you can acheive the sound you want through clever use of your hands. As well as holding your kazoo, you can use your hands to sculpt the sounds you're making.

Mutes: Partially obscuring your bell with a hand can produce a variety of muting effects. Experiment with hand placement to produce more or less muted sound.

You can cup your hand and move between more- and less-muted positions, producing a trumpet-like "wah-wah" sound. Here, I play a few notes in a cupped Small-End Third Position: 128k MP3 64k MP3

Stops: Totally obstruct the bell with your hand. This can be done rapidly with a flicking motion. Experiment for maximum success.
Forced vibrato: hold a fold of the skin in front of your voice box, and wobble it vigourously to produce a vibrato sound. Perform at own risk. this sample may help you understand the vibrato better: 128k MP3 64k MP3
